The Ventura County Transportation Commission in California implemented an electronic fare payment system on its buses. The "Go Ventura" smart card allows transit riders to use electronic fare payment on the109 buses operated by the county transit systems. The cost of the fare card payment system is about $1.7 million.

Buses are equipped with smart card readers and data from the readers are processed daily at transit agency bus maintenance facilities. Data from the maintenance facilities are transmitted to a central processing system.
