Summary Information
As part of an evaluation of automated truck rollover warning systems, PennDOT researched curve speed warning systems in several other states. The evaluation data highlighted in this presentation showed that the cost of these systems varied significantly, ranging from $50,000 to $500,000, as did the system configurations. Configurations included:
- Invasive and non-invasive detection
- Weight-based versus simplified speed class algorithms
- Varying types of system calibrations used to activate warnings (warn vehicles most at-risk on an impending rollover versus warn all vehicles exceeding the warning speed of the curve).
